introduction
- added an extra dimenstion to the three dimensions of space and in so doing, gave a unified description of gravity and electrodynamics
- two extra dimensions rolled up into a tiny 2-sphere
- three photonlike particles emerged
- each photon carried charge; it could emit either of the other two
